In the article, â€Å"What it takes to Be Great,† Geoffrey Colvin makes the argument â€Å"you will achieve greatness only through an enormous amount of hard work over many years. And not just any hard work, but work of a particular type that’s demanding and painful.† He explains that anyone can become great and no one is born with a gift for a specific profession. Colvin uses many examples to support his statement such as Tiger Woods, a golf champion, Winston Churchill, a great orator, and Michael Jordan, a basketball player. They have proved that â€Å"the ten year† rule, deliberate practice, and aiming to get better has helped them achieve greatness. At 14, he completely lost his harmonic singing voice due to puberty changes and failed to sale any records. His inspiration grew and he devoted himself to singing e ven more than before. Being threatened of losing his recording contract, he deliberately practiced and began to write his own music to better assist his new voice. At 18 years old, after continuous effort, hard work, and dedication, Usher made huge progress and sold 7 million copies! He continued to work attentively and at 25 years old, he sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide! (Rodney) Usher says himself, Even seven albums in, I still try to be innovative, blaze new trails, but allow people to come along on the journey. Its all about striving for greatness and offering the best that I have.
